Are you looking to purchase a new floor but unsure what size you need?
Brit Floors has created a step by step guide to ensure you have all the flooring you need to complete the fitting in one go.
- Firstly with a pen and paper draw a rough diagram of the shape of the room you are flooring. If it’s multiple rooms you are purchasing floor for these need to be calculated as 2 separate drawings.
- Next, Get a tape measure and measure the widest parts of each room. If your room is square measure the length and the width at the widest parts in metres and add these measurements to your diagram.
Diagram 1 Floor Plan

- If the room you are measuring isn’t square, are you able to split the room into two sections like the diagram below?
- Measure the width and length of these sections separately again in metres at the widest point and add them to your diagram.

How to work out m2 for new flooring
The majority of new floor is ordered in m2 so how do we get the calculation.
- From your diagram which has previously been measured you now need to multiply the length by the width to get a calculation for m2.
- For example diagram 1 is 6m in length by 3m in width, 6x3 = 18 = your metre squared figure for that room is 18m2.
- Diagram 2 is a little more tricky, if you are measuring rooms that aren’t square. For your first section multiply the length and the width to get your calculation, and do this again for the second section. Once you have your 2 m2 figures you need to add these together to get a total for the room.
- For example Diagram 2 section 1 is 5m in length and 3.5m in width, 5x3.5 = 17.5, your metre square figure is 17.5m2, section 2 is 9 m in length and 4m in width, 9x4 = 36, your metre square figure is 36m2.
Add 17.5 and 36 = 53.5. Your m2 room size for diagram 2 is 53.5m2
